Screening for Mesothelioma: Detecting Mesothelioma Before Symptoms

Diagnosing mesothelioma in the early stages has proven to be difficult. Biomarkers and diagnostic procedures are the most common way of determining this cancer’s existence, but if mesothelioma could be identified through cancer screenings, the chances of survival could increase. Cancer screenings intend to identify cancer before symptoms appear, and in cancers like breast, cervical,…

Risk Factors From Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy Could Be Determined By Early Biomarker

Peritoneal mesothelioma is an extremely rare form of mesothelioma that affects the abdominal lining, or peritoneum.  Caused by asbestos exposure, peritoneal mesothelioma can be difficult to diagnose because symptoms are not entirely unique to the disease, so a diagnosis has to be more than just what symptoms are observed. Through MRIs, CAT scans, biopsies, and…

A Randomised Phase II Open-label Study With a Phase Ib Safety lead-in Cohort of ONCOS-102, an Immune-priming GM-CSF Coding Oncolytic Adenovirus, and Pemetrexed/Cisplatin in Patients With Unresectable Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Purpose:The trial is an open-label, parallel group, multicentre trial that will recruit a total of 30 patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. The trial will be conducted in 2 phases: a non-randomised safety phase and a randomised phase. The safety phase will consist of a lead-in cohort of 6 patients treated with ONCOS 102 and pemetrexed/cisplatin. The randomised phase will not commence until the DSMB has deemed the safety lead-in data appropriate for continuation. A total of 24 patients will be included in the randomised phase; 14 patients will be randomised to receive ONCOS 102 and pemetrexed/cisplatin, and 10 patients will receive pemetrexed/cisplatin alone. The trial’s main objectives are determination of safety, immune activation, clinical response and the correlation between clinical outcome and the immunological data.

Phase 1 Study of CK-301 as a Single Agent in Subjects With Advanced Cancers

Purpose CK-301 is a fully human monoclonal antibody of IgG1 subtype that directly binds to Programmed Death-Ligand 1 (PD-L1) and blocks its interactions with the Programmed Death-1 (PD-1) and B7.1 receptors. The primary objective of this study is to assess the safety, tolerability and preliminary efficacy of CK-301 when administered intravenously as a single agent to subjects with selected recurrent or metastatic cancers.

Legitimate Data and Research is Required for Treatment Approval

For cancer patients who have little success with traditional chemotherapy and radiation treatments, immunotherapy treatments are becoming known alternatives – working with the body’s own immune system to become stronger and better able to fight cancer cells and other infections. A mesothelioma diagnosis is often grim, with survival rates at approximately one year at diagnosis.…

Pleural Catheter vs. Pleurodesis

Symptoms for pleural mesothelioma are typically centered on lung function breathing, with shortness of breath (dyspnea), pleural effusion (fluid build-up), and pain in the chest being the primary indicators.  There is no cure for malignant pleural mesothelioma and while scientists and researchers are continually developing new treatments and therapies, in the meantime, advancements in palliative…

Funding Needed for Lung Cancer Awareness and Research – How You Can Help

As November draws to a close, so does Lung Cancer Awareness Month, but that doesn’t mean we should forget about this devastating cancer that affects hundreds of thousands of people annually. For a cancer than claims more lives than breast, colon, and prostate cancer combined, it is severely underfunded, leaving scientists and researchers reliant on…

Smoking Plus Asbestos Exposure – A Deadly Combination

In 2004, the American Thoracic Society called asbestos “the largest cause of occupational cancer in the United States and a significant cause of disease and disability from nonmalignant disease.” Asbestos is a known carcinogen. It has been found to be the cause of many different cancers in those who were exposed to the popular building…
